Q & A with Jeff Hathaway '49

Leading Alpha Mu in the "Taking Back Our Houses!" Effort

This Q&A interview is part of an ongoing series designed to help us get to know our brothers better.

What better place to start than with Jeff Hathaway '49, president of your Pi Kappa Phi Alumni Corporation.

If you know a brother you think would make a good profile candidate, please send his name and graduation year, along with your name and graduation year, to our alumni relations service: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Make sure to mention it is for Pi Kappa Phi, PSU.

Why did you join Pi Kappa Phi?
It appeared to be the most exciting thing ever offered to me up until that time!

Tell us about your favorite memory of the fraternity.
All the various Big Weekends and the Rose Balls that occurred during my undergraduate years.

What kind of influence has the fraternity had on your life since graduation?
It has impacted my ability to strive further than my reach.

What other organizations were you involved with during your college days?
The "State Party" and the All College Tribunal.

Did you live in the house? If so, who were your roommates? Tell us about a memorable time with them.
I lived in the house for six semesters with various roommates including Jack Bohm '48, Bob Gabriel '50, Willie Bertram '48 and the Herold brothers - Fred '50 and George '50. Probably one outing that included all was the trip to Laurel, Md., to stay with Tabby Miles '48. We attended the PSU-Navy game, which we won in Memorial Stadium, 20-7, in the rain.

What do you do for a living?
I am a retired veterinarian.

What affiliations do you currently have and/or public service do you participate in?
I am a 50-year member of Rotary, working several years with the Brandywine, Del., club and now with the Hawley, Pa., club. I am also a representative on the Greek Alumni Council of PSU, a group devoted to "Taking Back Our Houses!" The recognized "problems" with fraternities are NOT just ours, but all-encompassing.

What hobbies do you enjoy?
Golf and fly-fishing.

What are your goals for the next few years?
I am eager to persevere with my position as Alumni Corporation president until such time as the house is back in a condition more in keeping with civility and responsibility. Large strides have been made, but we have a long way yet to go.
